Everyday Examples of AI and Technology We Don’t Realize

If you watched I, Robot back in 2004, you might remember that the whole concept of the movie revolves around Artificial Intelligence (AI) gone rogue.

While the concept is scary, I was very fascinated by the idea and actually waited for technology to advance to a stage where we would have AI all around us. Now, 21 years later, we finally have the technology, as most things around us in our houses are powered by AI, and we don’t even realize it.

However, with current AI models, you need to make sure that you have a reliable internet connection as a prerequisite for the devices to work. I highly recommend using Cox internet for all your smart devices powered by AI, so you can maximize their functionality and experience minimal outages.

Now, you might be wondering what are some of the best examples of AI in everyday life. Here’s everything you need to know about the most common uses of AI in everyday life.

Voice Assistants

The first, most common example of AI is a voice assistant, such as Google’s Nest Hub, Amazon’s Alexa, and even Apple’s Siri. These voice assistants make great use of AI to listen to and understand your voice commands, and then execute the action that you tell them to do.

For instance, you can open Siri on your iPhone and ask it to call Mark at his mobile number. Siri will compute the instructions, decipher them, and then go through your contact list to call Mark. This is only one example among many others that you can do with a voice assistant.

You can set reminders, send texts, play music, and do anything else that you would like to do on your phone.

Smart Home Devices

You may be glad to know that even the smart home devices installed in your home are backed up by AI, which basically allows them to automate your mundane tasks for you.

For instance, if a smart thermostat is able to remember your preferences to change the temperature accordingly, then it is all thanks to the AI behind it.

Similarly, a device as simple as a Roomba robot vacuum also utilizes AI to map out your house and automatically vacuum it. AI also helps it navigate. In case there are any obstructions in its path, it can easily sidestep the obstruction and continue vacuuming.

Facial Recognition Devices

Have you ever wondered how the Face ID feature in your iPhone works? It looks pretty simple, as all you have to do is bring your face in front of the phone, and it unlocks, right? You will be amazed at all the computational data that goes behind such a simple task.

However, all that computation is powered by AI, which makes the process very seamless and allows your phone to unlock instantaneously. The same is for the facial recognition feature in Android phones, where the AI maps out your facial structure and features for your phone to unlock in an instant.

Similarly, automatic photo tagging in apps like Facebook and Google Photos also uses AI to group pictures of people in one place, making it easier for you to segregate your pictures of loved ones separately.

Streaming Services

Ever thought about how platforms like Netflix and YouTube figure out what you should watch next so that they can suggest it to you? They make great use of AI as well, and the algorithm figures out your preferences so that it can suggest further titles to you.

This goes for both movies and TV shows, so that you don’t run out of content to watch. Plus, you’ll also see that the suggestions are very similar.

For instance, if you just got done watching The Good Doctor, then Netflix might recommend that you watch House M.D. next, since it has the same medical theme. So, always make sure that you make the best out of these recommendations.

The same idea goes for music streaming apps as well, which I will tell you more about in the section ahead.

Music Streaming Services

Just like Netflix, most popular music streaming services also use AI to give you a well-thought-out, curated music experience. For instance, if you take a look at the premium version of Spotify, you get access to a dedicated AI radio that automatically plays music in accordance with your recent listening.

Again, you can see the AI at work as it reads your music history and fetches similar music so that you always have something new to discover.

This is one of the most effective ways in which I’ve made my Liked Songs playlist go over 3,000! A true music fan right there.

So, now you see how AI has made its way into our everyday lives. Who knows, maybe one day, all of our tasks may be done by AI, and we’ll have to do is sit back and relax.
